This grand cycling holiday at the Baltic Sea takes you along the Mecklenburg coast to Rügen, the largest German island.  Venerable hanseatic cities, elegant sea resorts, unspoilt landscapes and the famous chalk cliffs lie on your way. Your varied journey comes to an end on the island Hiddensee where there are no cars and which is known for its unique flora and fauna. Day 1
Lübeck

Individual Arrival at Lübeck

Upon arrival in the old hanseatic city of Lübeck, you should avail of the opportunity of strolling through the old town, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.  The old town is full of great shops and cosy bars. The "Holstentor", Salt warehouse or the "Buddenbrook" house from the famous novel by Thomas Mann are only some of the attractions the town has to offer. The town’s famous delicacy is "Lübecker Marzipan".

Day 2
Lighthouse of Wismar

Lübeck - Wismar, approx. 60 km + train journey or approx. 80 km

The first stage of the tour takes you directly to the Baltic Sea: to the well-known spa town of Travemünde, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. The stylish promenade is in stark contrast to the long, sandy beaches and small fishermen’s cottages. After the ferry journey across to Priwall, you will continue cycling past Boltenhagen and into the beautifully restored town of Wismar, which is full of romantic corners and numerous attractions.

Day 3

Wismar - Warnemünde/Rostock, approx. 70/80 km

From Wismar the trip continues on through pine forests and fishing villages to Kühlungsborn with a 240 m long pier. Passing the traditional town of Bad Doberan you will cycle inland towards Warnemünde. The main attraction here is the lighthouse which can be seen from far off. Climb to the platform 30 m up and enjoy the view over the land and sea!

Day 4
Darß

Warnemünde/Rostock - Fischland-Darß, approx. 45/55 km

In Warnemünde you shouldn’t miss the chance to walk along the 530 metre long pier. You can also visit the fishermen´s cottages, cutters and yachts in Alten Strom, before you continue your trip to Fischland and then to the Darß peninsula. Natural forests, stretching to the kilometre long sand beaches, moors and sandbanks and small islands are all waiting to be discovered!

Day 5
Former abbey Barth

Fischland/Darß - Barth, approx. 40 km

Take time to discover the "Darßer Forest" and the wildly romantic coast of the region.  Visitors can experience a somewhat unusual cultural treat with "Art on Tracks", an exhibition in old railway carriages in Bresewitz. Passing through Zingst, your tour will then continue along the mainland, to Barth, where you will be able to view the remains of the town walls from the 16th century.

Day 6
Stralsund

Barth - Stralsund, approx. 45 km

Today you will cycle towards yet another highlight of the trip: the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The city´s three towers can be seen from afar by approaching cyclists. The protected old town attests to the former importance of the town as a trading centre. The impressive marine science, fishery and aquatic museum is a highlight not to be missed.

Day 7

Stralsund - Sellin, approx. 55 km

Crossing over the Rügendamm bridge you will leave the mainland and reach Altefähr. A peaceful tour lies ahead. In Putbus you will reach the "Rasenden Roland", a narrow-gauge railway, which has survived for years and is still an important mode of transport.

Day 8
Bay of Sassnitz

Sellin - Sassnitz approx. 30 km

Today you will cycle along Prorer Wiek Bay and reach the Baltic seaside resort of Binz, which due to its fine, sandy beach and sheltered location is one of the most popular beaches on Rügen. The typical seaside resort architecture of the Baltic Sea gives Binz a nostalgic charm. Take the opportunity to spend a day at the seaside!  Passing the important ferry harbour of Mukran you will reach your destination.

Day 9
Wittow

Sassnitz - Wittow, approx. 40 km

The first stop today is the famous cliff called "Königstuhl". The area is part of the Jasmund Nature park, where for example 20 types of orchids grow. Cycling along the 12 km long Schaabe Spit, the barrier between the "Jasmunder Bodden" and the Baltic Sea, you will reach the Wittow peninsula, the most northerly part of Rügen.

Day 10
Hiddensee

Wittow - Hiddensee - Stralsund, approx. 35 km

Today your Rügen tour comes to an end as you cross by boat over to Hiddensee. This island is well known for its beautiful beaches and for its unique flora and fauna. Hiddensee has no cars and has a peaceful rural charm. In the afternoon you will leave the island and return by boat through the "Kubitzer Bodden" to Stralsund.

    The bike tour route of the Baltic Sea cycle path takes you through partly flat, partly hilly terrain. You will cycle mostly on quiet roads, cycle paths, country and forest lanes. The route doesn't only follow the coast but often takes trips into the diverse hinterland. On Rügen there are some short stretches on sandy paths.

    You have the option to take a minibus which runs on a daily basis, including bikes. Duration approximately two hours, needs to be stated on booking.Alternatively you can organise your journey by train on your own initiative. Trains run every two hours, change trains 1-3 times, duration: approximately 3 hours, normal price: 50€, excluding bikes.
