Cycling Tour on Ruegen - Chalk Cliffs on Rügen

Rügen: Germany's largest island with a turbulent past and unique natural phenomenons! Slavs, Hanseatic seafarers, Sweden and Prussia have left their marks here. The lobed coast with its flat sandy beaches, steep chalk cliffs and many inland waters- the so-called “Bodden”, offers impressive experiences. In the old seaside resorts you will find many reminders of the Belle Époque. On the island Hiddensee you can discover the well-known weather station, while in Putbus you can enjoy a trip through famous avenues, the national and nature parks or the hustle and bustle in the coastal towns in the steam locomotive “Rasender Roland”.  This cycling tour on Rügen is well suited for inexperienced cyclists, despite some mild inclines.

There are two versions of this tour:

Category B: Overnight stays in family run guesthouses and hotels of the national 2*/3* category.
Category A: Overnight stays in specially selected hotels of the national 3*/4*category.

Day 1
Stralsund

Individual Arrival in Stralsund

The starting point for your cycling tour on Rügen is the old Hanseatic city of Stralsund. Stroll through the old town which was founded by the Slavs and was developed into a city by the Westphalians. The city was under Swedish control for 200 years before being taken over by the Prussians. The upkeep of the historical architecture of the town led to its declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Marine Museum is also worth a visit.

Day 2
Granitz castle

Stralsund - Granitz, approx. 40/63 km

Once you have crossed over the Rügendamm bridge to the island, your next stop is Putbus. Prince Wilhelm Malte founded the residence and bathing town in 1810 and made an Italian dream reality. White, classical buildings, parks and avenues dominate the townscape to this day. Continuing your journey, you will reach the biosphere reserve with its unique natural and cultivated landscape. Wide, sandy beaches, rough cliffs, expansive beech forests and meadows are characteristic of this region.

Day 3

Granitz - Jasmund, approx. 40  km

Cycling along Prorer Wiek Bay, you will reach Binz, which is the most popular bathing place on Rügen, due to its fine, sandy beach and sheltered location. The typical seaside resort architecture of the Baltic Sea gives Binz a nostalgic charm with a touch of the "Belle Époque". Your onward journey to the Jasmund headland leads you past one of the most beautiful beaches on Rügen. Take the chance to spend a day at the seaside!

Day 4
Rügen

Jasmund - Königsstuhl - Wittow, approx. 45 km

The National park Jasmund is famous for its steep, chalk cliffs at Stubbenkammer, the most famous of which is the 117 m high Königsstuhl. From the top of this plateau-like cliff you can see for kilometres along the chalk cliff coastline. On sunny mornings the view is unforgettable as the sunlight bathes the chalk cliffs in a blinding white light and the turquoise sea glistens at the foot of the cliffs.
